CharlesEdwards Wants Seniors to Understand and Avoid STOLI

A life settlement is a legal transaction whereby the owner of a life insurance policy sells his or her life insurance policy in return for an amount that exceeds the cash surrender value.  In contrast, a STOLI (Stranger Originated Life Insurance ) is an illegal transaction where a third party, convinces a person to take out a life insurance policy with an agreement that the third party will assume ownership of the policy in return for some sort of compensation.  The prominent operators in the life settlement industry adamantly oppose STOLI and have sought laws and regulations to stomp out STOLI activities.

This Insurance Studies Institute article explains the difference between a Life Settlement and STOLI and provides information on how to avoid STOLI.

Charles M. Edwards Company, Inc. and Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. agreed on terms, today, paving the way for trademark registration of the mark, CharlesEdwards.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA  (September 17, 2008)  Charles M. Edwards Company, Inc. (CharlesEdwards) announced today that it had entered into an agreement with Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. in which Charles Schwab agreed to withdraw its objection to the application filed by CharlesEdwards to register its mark, CharlesEdwards, with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Major terms of the agreement call for the mark, which will be applied worldwide, to be used only without italicization and that existing materials previously including the italicized style to be replaced within a specified period of time.

"We are very pleased to have reached this amicable agreement with Charles Schwab over the use and stylization of our mark, CharlesEdwards," said Steven E. Tartaglini, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of CharlesEdwards.  "For over 3 years, our clients have known us by our tradename, CharlesEdwards.  This agreement with Charles Schwab paves the way for us to now proceed with the full trademark protection that we sought out to obtain when we first filed our application with the USPTO in November of 2007."

CharlesEdwards anticipates receiving full registration rights by the end of January 2009.
